How long do ikea cabinets last
Ikea does their best to make sure they have all the pieces in stock, but sometimes they'll be sold out of certain things. If this happens, you'll need to take home what you can and come back for the rest once it all arrives. This happened to us. We had all the pieces except for 5 or 6 parts a few doors, some drawers, and a side panel.
Unfortunately for us we live 3 hours away from the closest Ikea so we had to make an extra trip. BUT if you go into it prepared to make trips you won't be disappointed.
Just like the furniture you buy from Ikea, you're given a booklet of instructions on how to build each cabinet step by step. The positive of this is that everything is packaged flat in boxes so transporting them is much easier. We easily fit all the kitchen cabinets in our trailer with plenty of room to spare. The downside is that once you get home you have to build each one. I will say that after a while we got used to it and it kind of became fun!
It does take a bit of time to assemble each one though so plan on that. Before ordering our cabinets, we were a little concerned about how easily the black finish would show scratches. As far as smudges, yes, the black cabinets do show smudges over time from greasy fingers.
Although I think any black cabinet would do this…not just Ikea cabinets. You can take home the cabinets the same day you order them. Their cabinets are easy to hang with their unique rail system. Instructions are extremely helpful in their booklets.
Trust me you'll be amazed at the unique storage options available! Some cabinet doors are low quality so be sure you pick a higher quality door before ordering. If they don't have all the cabinets in stock, you have to go back to pick them up at a later date.
Overall I am really impressed with our cabinetry, the quality, and our experience with Ikea. In fact, I would most definitely install another Ikea kitchen in our next home. The main thing to remember is to research and know the quality of the door you're ordering. Check in with an Ikea kitchen expert to make sure your plans are good to go and set aside a day or two to assemble your cabinets! This post is not endorsed by Ikea in any way! They were over 50k at the Home Depot. If you can make IKEA cabinets work for your kitchen, then go for it! If you realize like I did that you need a higher end product, check out www. Good luck. Bad tile job?! Am I crazy?! Am I crazy for considering a cream sofa.
Kitchen design ideas, am I crazy to want to mix stones? We had an ikea kitchen installed by our GC just this past winter. We bought during the sale to get the discount and saved so much money. I planned it myself so that I could have exactly what I wanted. We were able to customize a few of the cabs to fit the space. After having framed cabs for 8 years, the frameless, spacious, perfectly square cabs are a welcome change. The maximera drawers are awesome. I also like that at some point, if we want, we can change out the doors and drawer fronts and try something else.
Styles change rapidly now. Our GC loves this kitchen, which surprised him. He had worked with older IKEA cabs and did not like them, but really thought the quality of the Sektion series was very good. He wants pictures of our kitchen for his website. I think it does come down to installation precision and attention to detail- our GC was really thorough and professional. And who is anyone to deny someone the right to be fleeced out of their money themselves. That makes sense according to everything I read.
The reason I think it's relevant here is that people often use it as a reason to knock Ikea cabinets, and I think it's a poor reason. I am a semi-retired disabled architect who likes to be hands-on and specializes in low budget projects. One has plywood, face framed plywood boxes with inset Shaker style doors. We upgraded all drawers and added soft-close hinges. On the other job, we waited months for the custom cabinets only to have the pantry arrive damaged TWICE pullout shelves and drawer are narrow, very expensive and far inferior to Ikea.
The fit and finish is much better with Ikea due to the great adjustments and solid mounting system. I assembled the drawers while my friend put the boxes together. The cheap faces were used as patterns. We set the cabinets on recessed 2x4 bases with black facing to match th countertops. There were some mistakes which the wonderful truckers resolved. I have never been able to reach anyone at Ikea since the original order.
Assembly took less than a day and the complex installation with countertops and sink, a week more. No charge for labor. All told, with labor the "custom" cabinets cost 10 x as much. Bonus, we have lots of scrap from the countertops and fronts for other uses. Ikea wins by a mile. I agree. Although I ordered RTA high end cabinets from the factory. I paid a fraction of what stores are charging.
I should emphasise that both clients got what they wanted and needed. The other client as remodeling a year old house and wanted face framed cabinets with inset shaker doors. Also, we had a small simple kitchen with dead level concrete floors and plumb straight walls.
Finally, Bamboo is not technically a wood; It is much more stable and the plywood edges are elegant. If not Bamboo, I'd go with the higher end fronts or aftermarket ones.
As to the countertops, there are two straight runs of seven feet. If you have a large complex kitchen in an old house, I'd go to professional custom cabinets. PS All of the wonderful plywood came from Amderson Plywood. It will not be obvious. Thousands of people have done this, and creating custom fronts for IKEA cabinets is a whole industry. No one will know you used IKEA boxes, not that there's anything wrong with that.
If you search this site, it will be full of beautiful examples of what people did using such a scenario. Things to keep in mind when designing an IKEA kitchen is that their sizes are limited, and if it works with your layout, great, if not, consider something else.
Their cabinets are also greatly hackable. Installation quality matters too. Here's my kitchen done with IKEA boxes, custom fronts, quartz counters and fancy tile. I haven't heard the end of the compliments, and mine is far from the best and most beautiful you'll see here.
We did not include costs of flooring, as it was replaced throughout the house; dishwasher or fridge as we re-used them; lighting or wiring for the cooktop, as it was part of a larger project to repair and upgrade the service and install safe lighting.
I designed it and assembled all the cabinets and installed the drawers, fronts and pulls myself. Hubs helped with placing cabs, leveling and screwing them together and plumbed the sink and dishwasher.
Oh love that kitchen! Nice job. My kitchen is huge and open as in vaulted ceilings so I ran into a lot of issues renovating. Both were given my kitchen plans with measurements. In any case, time is what we sacrificed to DIY.
Food for thought. Loved all the kitchens. Thank you. I no longer have any specific details about brands and retailers. IKEA cabs are built based on the 32mm Euro system.
This was developed for cheap quick cabinet making. Cabinets sides are all basically the same speeding up cabinet making. You just simply plug and play the drawers or doors you want. Nothing will outlast face frame furniture built cabinets. Its the face frames that make the difference but they are also what doubles the cost. Each cabinet has to be built to spec. There is nothing different between an IKEA Euro cabinet and a supposed high end Euro 32mm cabinet besides the finishes and access.
MDF, Plywood and particleboard all fail when wet which would make you think why don't cabinet mfg's use a marine grade wood or plastic to build sink base cabinets? They are the only cabinets that get wet otherwise the whole real wood debate doesn't apply. Face frame cabients with standard hinges and slides will last forever but everyone wants soft close.
Merillat does make an all plastic sink base. I use it in a lot of Classic jobs. Jobs that generally come in less expensive than Ikea with custom fronts. As can any Kitchen Designer who deals with several cabinet lines. Hillside House, would you have a picture of that 33" cabinet solution that you'd be willing to share? Here is the almost complete Ikea bamboo faced kitchen total cost with donated labor about including all appliances floor countertop and sliding doors.
Where the other lines really get you is on the doors, large panels, AND the organizational pull-outs. I got connestoga cabinets RTA fully custom cabinets for under 20k and I was quoted nearly 60 elsewhere. Yes, mine are face frame. My kitchen is huge - I have 2 10ft islands and 2 walls. Most US kitchens seem to be stuck in the 's with their traditional styles and plywood construction and utilitarian looking over-sized appliances. Plywood is a great material for a sub-floor but it warps and bends in a way that MDF or Particle board does not.
Basically, if you want something flat and stable then use engineered wood. Same argument goes for the looks of horror when you say you've put down an engineered wood floor - people can't get their head around the fact that it's much more forgiving than solid wood blocks and the fact that you can't refinish it 12 times with a sander is not a disadvantage because NOBODY DOES THAT. I believe that Ikea kitchen are a great product for the price. Of course, custom cabinetry is better.
But if your budget does not allow for a completely custom, locally built kitchen then I believe that an Ikea kitchen remodel is an excellent second choice. Our remodelled Ikea kitchen functioned beautifully and the cabinetry held up extremely well to everyday use. We absolutely love the way that you can have a drawer inside a drawer, so that the kitchen design appears much more streamlined and cleaner but still allows you to have several smaller drawers for storage.
We also adore the fact that Ikea has developed so many organizers that fit perfectly within their drawers so that everything you need can be well-organized and easily within reach. Higher end kitchens likely also have these features, but the fact that you can get such customized organizational features with such an affordable kitchen system is, I believe, the biggest perk of an Ikea kitchen.
We also love the hardware! And by hardware I mean the soft-close system that is used for doors as well as the sliding hardware they include for all of the drawers.
Our friend who helped us install the majority of our kitchen cabinets and helped us tweak our design to make it look more custom is an expert on custom cabinetry and he said the hardware that Ikea sends is the same high-end hardware he has used on custom kitchen installations.
The plastic feet that the base cabinets sit on feel kind of junky and cheap and next time we would build wooden bases for the cabinets to sit on throughout. We only built a wooden base for the island in our forest house renovation. They look fine once they are on, but when we install our next Ikea kitchen we plan to colour match and paint our own MDF trim toe kicks rather than using the ones you can purchase through Ikea.
An Ikea kitchen costs a fraction of the price of a custom kitchen, but is probably comparable to many big box stores lower end pre-fab kitchen options. The difference is that, I believe, the quality of Ikea kitchen cabinets, and especially of the hardware that they use for their drawers and doors, is much great quality than you would get with a big box store inexpensive pre-fab design as I mentioned above.
Considering the size of our kitchen and the number of cabinets, I would say that is an amazing space. In fact, when our contractor for our new build came to our home to originally look at our floor plans, he was shocked it was an Ikea kitchen. The biggest thing to consider is installation. Are you able to spend some time building and assembling the cabinets yourself? Or does your local community or local Ikea have a contractor is fast and affordable for an Ikea kitchen installation?
If not, you may end up spending much more than you anticipated on building, assembling, and installing your Ikea kitchen cabinets and this may reduce your savings to much less as a custom kitchen generally comes fully installed for the price.
The pros of choosing to do an Ikea kitchen remodel are that you get a good quality kitchen for the price. The hardware is excellent making the kitchen function and run smoothly. Being able to customize your look through tweaks and changes, you can create a brilliantly designed, highly efficient, well-organized kitchen that you love.
The con of choosing to do an Ikea kitchen remodel is that you need to put in a bit of sweat equity. But to many DIYers, sweat equity is not actually a con.
Sweat equity is the main way that we have gradually improved our financial situation over the years, one project at a time. There are a plethora of excellent videos on Youtube with advice on how to assemble and install an Ikea kitchen if it seems like the right path for you. I hope this post helps you as you consider whether or not an Ikea kitchen remodel is the right choice for your home and your family!
Where did you get that storage bench? We made it using Ikea Fridge Cabinetry — they had one setup in the Ikea I went to that they showed me — I have been meaning to write a post about how we did that. You can use the bracers they have to add extra support for heavier countertops, and then add a piece of end gable to the top of it.
